Precision@K emphasizes the quality of the first K results. It is distinct from Recall@K, which measures how much of the relevant set appears within the top K.

  • Precision@K is not Recall@K. Precision@K measures how many top-K results are relevant; Recall@K measures how much of the relevant set was retrieved within K.
  • Precision@K is not Average Precision. Precision@K measures precision at a fixed cutoff; Average Precision aggregates precision at relevant ranks across the ranked list.
  • Precision@K is not Mean Average Precision. MAP averages rank-sensitive AP values across topics; Precision@K only measures precision at a fixed cutoff.
  • Precision@K is not Success@K. Success@K is binary per query; Precision@K measures the fraction of top-K results that are relevant.
