The degree to which a retrieved item satisfies an information need, query, topic, or evaluation criterion.

Scope

In information retrieval evaluation, relevance may be binary or graded and is usually operationalized through relevance judgments. Relevance is the evaluation target, not itself a metric or a qrels file.

Not equivalent to

  • Relevance is not Qrels. Qrels are stored relevance judgments used for evaluation; relevance is the concept those judgments assess.
  • Relevance is not Ranking. Relevance is the relationship or criterion being estimated; ranking is the task of ordering results, often according to estimated relevance.
  • Relevance is not Relevance Judgment. Relevance is the underlying relationship between an item and an information need; a relevance judgment is an assessment or label of that relationship.
