Scope

Diversified retrieval is especially important for ambiguous or multifaceted queries, where returning near-duplicate results for one interpretation may be less useful than covering several plausible intents. It is distinct from ordinary ranking by relevance alone.

  • Diversified Retrieval is not Ranking. Diversified retrieval adds an explicit coverage or diversity objective; ranking generally orders results by relevance or utility and may or may not optimize diversity.
  • Diversified Retrieval is not Result Fusion. Result fusion combines ranked lists or result sets; diversified retrieval is an objective about covering aspects or intents in the returned results.
